Протокол, используемый между элементами телекоммуникационных сетей: шлюзом (Media Gateway) и контроллером шлюзов (Media Gateway Controller).

Для переноса сигнальных сообщений H.248 могут использоваться протоколы [[ProtocolIPandTCPandUDP][UDP]], [[ProtocolIPandTCPandUDP][TCP]], [[ProtocolSCTP][SCTP]] или транспортная технология ATM. 

*Стандартный порт* для переноса по [[ProtocolIPandTCPandUDP][UDP]] и [[ProtocolIPandTCPandUDP][TCP]] - *2944*.
